WordPress Guide

WordPress is our content management system. Please see the guide below for instructions.

Web Accessibility

All Fullerton College websites must meet web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA). For district guidelines and best practices, visit the NOCCCD Digital Accessibility page.

Use the WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool (web version or Chrome extension) to scan webpages for accessibility issues.

Add alt text to meaningful images

Add alt text to all meaningful images in WordPress. Alt text should briefly describe the content or purpose of the image.

Guidelines:

  • Be concise and descriptive
  • Focus on what a user needs to understand the image
  • Do not include “image of” or “picture of”
  • Leave alt text blank for decorative images

Images with text:

  • Avoid using images that contain large amounts of text
  • If text is included in an image, repeat that text in the alt text or on the page

Avoid inaccessible content:

  • Do not upload flyers or documents as images
  • Instead, create a web page or link to a PDF using clear, descriptive link text

Use descriptive link text

Use descriptive link text so users know exactly what to expect before clicking.

Guidelines:

  • Clearly describe the destination or action
  • Keep link text concise but meaningful
  • Better: “Club Rush event details”, “Learn more about Commencement”
  • Avoid: “Read more”, “Click here”

MAKE SURE COLOR CONTRAST IS STRONG

Ensure text has sufficient contrast against its background so it can be read by all users.

Guidelines:

  • Avoid using low-contrast color combinations (e.g., light gray text on a white background)
  • Minimum contrast ratios are 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt and above)

Check your contrast:
Use the WAVE Contrast Tool to verify your color combinations meet accessibility standards.

Use headings for structure not for visual design

Use headings only to organize content and not for visual styling. If text is not a section title, it should not be a heading.

Guidelines:

  • Headings should organize content in a logical hierarchy. Proper nesting order:
    • H1 = page title (one per page)
    • H2 = main sections
    • H3 = subsections under H2

How to style text correctly in WordPress
The WordPress theme allows you to style text without using heading tags.

  • Use a Paragraph/Text module for normal content
  • Use the Design tab (font size, weight, color, spacing) to change how text looks
  • Only use headings (H1–H6) when you are creating structure (sections and subsections)

Avoid Linking PDFs

Use a web page and plain text content instead of a PDF whenever possible. Webpages are more accessible, easier to read on mobile, and better for screen readers.
