Costume Safety and Guidelines

To ensure that Buzzy has a smooth appearance at any Fullerton College event, Buzzy should remain hydrated and take frequent breaks based on their needs.

  • Designated Break Time: The actor must have a designated break time during the event. Break times can be designated by the actor and handler at the event.
  • Getting into Costume: Buzzy must have access to a private dressing room. Public restrooms are not allowed.

Interacting with Children

Buzzy should let children approach first. Buzzy may get on one knee to meet the child at the same level. If a parent is present, Buzzy is encouraged to interact with the parent first. For safety reasons, Buzzy may not hold a child or baby. If a parent or child requests to be held, Buzzy’s handler may step in and communicate “no” to the parent and child.

Buzzy's Handler

Buzzy must have a handler provided by the requesting campus unit who will accompany them to and from any event. The handler’s responsibilities include:

  • Accompany Buzzy and remain within arm’s reach at any time.
  • Manage crowd interaction (e.g., instruct students, faculty and staff when and how to take photos, answer questions).
  • Act as Buzzy’s eyes and ears and help detect blind spots.
  • Carry Buzzy’s supplies, if applicable.
  • Assist Buzzy with getting dressed.
  • Ensure that interactions with Buzzy are calm and collected (e.g., avoid rushing, tackling or excessively touching Buzzy).

Request Process

Campus units interested in having Buzzy at their event should:

  • Submit a request through the communications request form. Your request will be carefully reviewed by the Office of Campus Communications and approved based on staff availability and priority.
  • Include key details such as event date, time and location in your request.
  • Provide a handler to accompany Buzzy for the entire duration of the event.

Who is allowed to be Buzzy?

The Office of Campus Communications will provide the staffing for Buzzy.
