Editorial Guide
Welcome to the Fullerton College editorial guide. This guide aligns with the AP stylebook for journalistic standards and standards set by the college to ensure clear, inclusive and accurate messaging across all platforms.
Academic degrees
Bachelor of Science degree, bachelor’s degree; Master of Arts, master’s degree.
Acronyms
There is rarely a need to use acronyms, especially for external audiences. Always spell out acronyms in the first reference. For example, Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), then the following references may include EOPS.
Ampersand (&)
Do not use “&” in place of “and”, unless it is part of a composition title, part of an organization’s formal name or an approved title.
Buildings
When listing locations, always use building and room numbers in the following format, Building 100, Room 105. For buildings with names, list as: Cruz Reynoso Hall, Building 200, Room 227.
Class/course titles
Capitalize titles of classes and courses (Ex: Exploring Medieval History; Gothic Literature: A Monster in the Castle). Do not capitalize general references, such as math or history.
College Name
Always Fullerton College; college (lowercase) on second reference, such as “the college”.
Comma
No comma before “and” or “or” in a series. For example, it is correct to write red, white and blue.
Composition Titles
Use quotation marks around them, no italics (Ex: Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”); names of academic journals, magazines and newspapers, however, use no quote marks.
Days of the Week
Always spelled out. Monday, Tuesday, etc.
Dollar Amounts
Used without zeros (Ex: Tickets are $12.)
Dr.
If the person has a doctorate, include it and be consistent for all doctoral-level names within a document. For individuals without a doctorate, no courtesy title (Mr., Mrs., Ms., etc.) is used.
Events
When listing events, the order of information should generally be event title, time, date and then place.
Hispanic
Hispanic is a federal term and is only used in our designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution. See Latinx below as the preferred term for all other uses.
Job Titles
Uppercase before the name and lowercase after the name (Ex: President Cynthia Olivo, or Dr. Cynthia Olivo, the college president).
Latinx
Latinx is the preferred term for Fullerton College, rather than using Hispanic (a federal term). For example, Latinx Heritage Month.
Months
Abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. when used with a specific date; for example. Jan. 12. Spell out when used alone. The others – March, April, May, June and July – are always spelled out.
Numbers
Spell out nine and under, use numerals for 10 and above; use a comma in 1,000.
Office or Program Names
Uppercase on first reference (Ex: Office of Academic Computing Technologies); lowercase on second reference, such as technology department, is acceptable.
Phone Numbers
Dashes between sets, no parentheses around area code (Ex: 714-992-7000).
Semesters
Semesters are not capitalized. Use lowercase for “spring semester” or “summer 2025”, etc.
Time of Day
Use periods in p.m. and a.m., no zeros needed (6 p.m., not 6:00 p.m.). Noon and midnight are spelled out, such as noon–6 p.m.
